Encore tangerines are medium-sized, squat, with an average diameter of 5 centimeters. The rind is yellow-orange in color, superficially speckled with brown or black spots, and is thin and easy to peel. The flesh is firm and juicy, easily segmented, laden with seeds, and have a sweet flavor with low acidity.
The Encore tangerine is available from spring until early summer.
Encore tangerines are botanically classified as Citrus reticulata, and are a late-season hybrid mandarin of two varieties, the King and the Mediterranean Willowleaf. Encore tangerines are considered less desirable because of their spotted skin and seed content, due to these deterrents this variety is not widely commercially available.
Encore tangerines are high in vitamin C, folate and fiber. They also contain amount of vitamin A, calcium and potassium. Tangerines are high in the antioxidant beta-carotene, and the flavonoids hesperetin and naringenin.
Encore tangerines may be consumed fresh or cooked in both savory and sweet applications. They are most often eaten fresh or juiced. Fresh segments can be used in salads and salsas. The juice can be used in marinades, sauces, vinaigrettes, cocktails, and simple syrups. Pair Encore tangerines with nuts, yogurt, fennel, fresh herbs, poultry and seafood. Keep at room temperature for a short time or refrigerate for longer storage.
Encore tangerines make up 70% of the tangerines grown by First Fresh, a New Zealand company, where its popularity has lead to the production of a seedless variety. They are grown extensively in Australia and are considered a popular.
The Encore tangerine was developed by H.B. Frost at the University of California Citrus Research Center. It was released for commercial production 1965, with limited success due to its size and appearance. The Encore tree flourishes in the coastal citrus growing region of Southern California where it is commonly grown as an ornamental. Its commercial exposure is limited to farmers and specialty markets within the United States.
