Wekiwa is a hybrid of a Sampson tangelo and an unknown type of grapefruit. Technically, their parentage makes Wekiwas a tangelolo, because of their tangelo parent, but they are usually just called tangelos. (Tangelos are crosses of a tangerine and a grapefruit or pomelo.) Other names for the Wekiwa are Lavender Gem and pink tangelo. These citruses are sometimes called baby grapefruits because they look so similar to grapefruits but in a smaller size. They are medium-small and generally round. The rind is a pale yellow, similar to common grapefruits. Inside, the flesh is pink and holds few seeds. The taste is tender, juicy, sweet, and a little tart.

Tangelos are mostly water, so they are low in calories. Like other citrus, they are very high in Vitamin C, and also contain calcium.
Wekiwa tangelos are a treat eaten fresh since they're delicious, easy to peel and segment, and don't contain very many seeds. These mini grapefruits can also hold their own in recipes substituted for their larger cousins or for oranges. Choose tangelos that are heavy for their size, which indicates that they are very juicy, and that have smooth skin. Tangelos are more fragile and perishable than oranges and grapefruits, and they bruise if handled roughly. They last a few days at room temperature, but longer in the refrigerator.
Tangelos are not yet as well known as some other citruses, but they are becoming more popular in the United States. They are increasing their presence especially in the gift fruit industry, but are available in stores around the country when in season.
Tangelos are thought to have first grown in southeast Asia 3,500 years ago, when insects cross-pollinated mandarin oranges and pomelos. Commercially, tangelos were not developed until somewhat recently. The Wekiwa tangelo was created in California in 1930, but didn't become more widely available until the 1980s.
