The Lavender Gem tangelo is a cross between a grapefruit and a Sampson tangelo, which itself is a hybrid of a tangerine and a grapefruit. Which is why some refer to the Lavender Gem as a "tangelolo." From the outside, the Wekiwa tangelolo looks like a miniature grapefruit; though it is more orange than yellow, it has the slightly flattened top and bottom and very round middle. The inner flesh of the Lavender Gem has a light pink blush, with more than a few seeds and is extremely juicy. The Lavender Gem offers a taste similar to a tangerine with sweet notes and mild acidity.
Lavender Gem tangelos are available during the late winter months and into the spring.
Lavender Gem tangelos are also known as Wekiwa Tangelos or ‘pink tangelo’. A hybrid of a grapefruit and a tangerine, the Lavender Gem is really considered a tangelo.
Lavender Gem tangelos are eaten fresh, out-of-hand. The Lavender Gem is ideal for juicing; use for marinades, a refreshing beverage or mixer. Cut sections and add to salads in place of a grapefruit or tangerine.
The Lavender Gem grows mainly in the Coachella Valley in Southern California. It was first brought to the Indio area of California in 1930. The hybrid grapefruit and tangelo grow well where citrus fruit thrives. It is found primarily at farmers markets in Southern California.
