Taylor's Gold pears have a shape very similar to a Comice pear; large and full at the base with no neck and a thick stem. They have a smooth, uniform, cinnamon-colored skin that may take on the occasional rose blush. With a delicate aroma and creamy flesh that is juicy and very tender, Taylor’s Gold pears offer a rich, sweet flavor.
Taylor's Gold pears are available from the fall through the early winter months.
Taylor’s Gold is an early season European pear variety related to the Comice pear. This European variety, botanically Pyrus communis, is most widely grown and found in New Zealand. The tasty Taylor’s Gold pears made its beverage debut in the fall of 2014 in Bold Rock Pear, a Virginia-based company’s hard cider.
Taylor’s Gold pears are ideal for making pies and sauces. Enjoy fresh out-of-hand, sliced on a salad, or pair with blue cheese or gorgonzola. The texture and sweetness of the Taylor’s Gold pear is well suited for baking. Ripen fruit at room temperature. Refrigerate ripe fruit for only a day or two.
This russet pear was first discovered in an orchard owned by Michael King-Turner in 1986 near Nelson, New Zealand. Initially believed to be a natural mutation of a Comice pear, the Taylor’s Gold pear is more likely a natural cross between a Bosc and a Comice pear. Taylor’s Gold has found popularity in New Zealand and was first grown in the US in Washington State in 1998 to mixed results. Taylor’s Gold pears are available in limited quantities.
