The small, plum-sized Peacotums have a peachy orange skin covered with dark reddish blush. The skin of a Peacotum has the fuzzy texture like its peach and apricot parents, with a hint of coloring from a plum. Its flesh is the color of a yellow peach with the consistency of its plum parentage. Peacotums have a unique flavor, with the taste of a plum and strong hints of apricot. Within the fruit lies the ‘stone’ seed which should be discarded.
Peacotums are available during the first few weeks of summer.
Peacotums are a new hybrid fruit from Zaiger’s Genetics in Modesto, California. A Peacotum is a stone fruit made from combining a plum, apricot, and yellow peach. This new variety was carefully hand-crossed and took over ten years to perfect before making its debut in markets around the US.
Peacotums can be eaten fresh, out-of-hand. Slice Peacotums for a snack or use for baking in pies and tarts. Cut the hybrid stone fruit into bite-sized pieces and mix with cottage cheese or top salads or ice cream.
Three varieties of Peacotum were released in 2010 by Zaiger’s Genetics. Two varieties, the 'Bella Cerise' and the 'Bella Royale' have been released for commercial sales, while one variety the ‘Bella Gold', is sold exclusively for home growers. Another, the Velvet Sunrise is a newer Peacotum variety. Zaiger’s fruit hybridization process is all natural and took over ten years to perfect the Peacotum.
