Salanova® lettuce comes in many different varieties, in both green and red colors. The fully-grown heads of lettuce are either flat (oak) or frilly, crisp or butterleaf. They have round bases with three times the amount of leaves than the standard head of lettuce, all growing in a rosette pattern. The “triple heads” as they are sometimes called, are made up of uniformly sized leaves growing from a uniquely structured core. Salanova® lettuces are given the chance to develop full flavor and texture profiles, as they are harvested when fully mature. Butterhead lettuces will have a softer, buttery texture whereas the crisp, frilly lettuces will have a crunch similar to iceberg and a sweet flavor.
Salanova lettuce is available in the summer months.
Salanova® lettuce is a full-sized variety developed for the baby lettuce market. Botanically these varieties are scientifically known as Lactuca sativa. They are sometimes referred to as Eazyleaf and Multileaf lettuce for its ease of harvest and compacted heads. The lettuce varieties are marketed as “one-cut and ready” and the developer has even partnered with a gadget maker to create a special Salanova® corer. Salanova® lettuces come in butterleaf, incised sweet crisp (frill), and oak leaf varieties.
Salanova® lettuce varieties contain calcium, fiber, and a small amount of protein and iron. Red-leafed varieties offer antioxidant benefits in the form of anthocyanins, the phytonutrients that give the lettuce its dark burgundy colors.
Salanova® lettuces are best for salads, but can also be used on sandwiches, in pastas or as a bed for proteins. A single cut at the base will separate the head of lettuce into numerous ready-to-eat, baby-sized leaves. Wash and pat the leaves dry before use. Salanova® lettuces will store best in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator and will keep longer than typical lettuce varieties.
The creators of the Salanova® lettuce varieties say that they hope to change the way people think of salad greens. The company, Rijk Zwaan, is known for its innovation. The innovative, family-owned company is one of the 10 largest vegetable breeding companies in the world operating on a global scale. Their mission is to stimulate vegetable consumption around the world by offering healthy and appealing varieties.
Salanova® lettuce was developed for the market by Dutch vegetable seed company, Rijk Zwaan. The eight different Salanova® lettuce varieties started out as two plants, with distinctly different leaves and growth patterns, found in a field during the early 1990s. It took plant breeders, Marco Moor and Egbert Smits, almost 10 years of breeding and natural selection to produce the different varieties. The trademarked lettuce was released to select growers for commercial use in 2005, only one in the United States - a bagged salad company. Rights to grow the trademarked varieties were released to the public in 2010. The grower has partnerships with seed companies in the United States, France, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Salanova® lettuces may be spotted at local farmer’s markets or in backyard gardens.
