King Dela grapes are very aromatic and aesthetically beautiful with a reddish-brown skin. Their sweet and juicy pulp is seedless and exhibits the distinct musky flavor of its parent, Muscat of Alexandria.
King Dela grapes are available in the summer and fall.
The King Dela grape is a hybrid variety of Vitis vinifera that is very popular in Japan. It is a cross between Muscat of Alexandria, a highly aromatic European white grape, and a Red Pearl, a little known black grape. King Dela grapes are so highly prized in Japan that each individual grape is sometimes found marketed as a separately packaged item, often at exorbitant prices. In fact, the particular bunch in the picture above cost around twenty-five dollars in 2013.
Like all black grape varieties, the King Dela grape is a good source of antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins A, C, K and resveratrol, a phytonutrient connected with heart health.
Due to the sweet flavor and juiciness of the King Dela grapes, they are excellent fresh out-of-hand. Make jellies or jams or combine with other fruits in pies and cakes. The sweetness and the aroma of its Muscat parentage make these Japanese grapes excellent pairing with a variety of cheeses
The King Dela grape was officially registered as a new grape variety in Osaka, Japan in 1985. They can be found in markets throughout Japan, and are rarely exported or found in other countries.
