The Kishu tangerine is a seedless, easy to peel variety. Measuring about two inches in diameter, the skin is very loose and the flesh is bright orange with a mild, sweet flavor.
Monterrey pears are a large variety from northern Mexico, botanically a cultivar of Pyrus pyrifolia. The Asian pear hybrid was selected from the tree of a popular southern Texas variety. Monterrey pears are a cross of European pear and a Japanese pear.

Kamo eggplants are squat, very round and tear-drop shaped. Kamo eggplants are deep purple in color with white coloration under or near the purple calyx. The skin is very thin. Known for its excellent flavor this eggplant has a creamier, dense and a more delicate texture than other varieties. Traditionally, Kamo eggplants are deep-fried in Japanese cuisine and recently are being paired with miso.

Kamo eggplant is considered one of the most prized ingredients of Kyoto cuisine. It is named after the Kamo river which runs through the center of the city.
Low in calories, saturated fats and sodium. Japanese eggplant is a high source of dietary fiber (the skin), vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, folate, potassium and manganese.
Traditionally grilled or boiled. Also found to be delicious cooked coated with miso paste, baked, fried or as part of a stuffing.
There is an old Japanese saying about eggplants. “Aki nasu yome ni kuwasuna, “which translates: Don’t let the daughter-in-law eat the fall eggplant.” Regarding the origins of the saying, two theories exist. The first is that fall eggplants are more delicious as they tend to be seedless. A mean mother-in-law would rather not share such a delicacy with her daughter-in-law who traditionally would move in and live with her new husband’s family. The second theory is much nicer – to take care of a daughter-in-law’s health. Asian health experts state that eating eggplant brings the body temperature down therefore a pregnant or soon-to-be-pregnant daughter-in-law should not eat “cold” foods in effort to stay warm and healthy. Lending to better possibilities for viable pregnancies and children to carry the family name.
This old heirloom from Kamo, Japan is a highly prized “Kyo-Yasai” or Kyoto traditional vegetable variety. It has been considered a delicacy for centuries. However, similar to Kobe beef but on a smaller scale, there is controversy concerning authenticity of produce. Upon ordering in a restaurant in Kyoto, Japan, one may be presented with three different kinds of Kamo eggplant. Kyo Brand from Kameoka, another from Kyoto or another from a local Kamigamo farmer who has been cultivating the vegetable in his family for decades. Strict legal boundaries are currently undefined.
