Rich and intensely sweet, the Black Republican cherry has shiny dark, purplish-black skin. Considered a medium-sized variety, it is smaller than most commercially available cherries which could be a reason for the loss in popularity. The heirloom cherry has a deep burgundy flesh that stains lips and fingers. Black Republican cherries have a strong flavor reminiscent of herbs, almond and rose that carries through when added to a variety of recipes.
Black Republican cherries are available in the spring and early summer, typically ripening later than other cherries.
Black Republican cherries are botanically classified as Prunus avium and have long been valued for their robust color and flavor. They are a parent to the popular Bing cherry and exhibit a classic "black cherry” essence that many subsequent cherries have aspired for. Black Republican cherries have a rich history in the United States and were named for the grower’s staunch abolitionist and Quaker beliefs, and a reputed participation in the Underground Railroad.
Black Republican cherries contain anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that are being heavily researched for their potential health benefits, including anti-inflammation and pain reduction. These deeply pigmented cherries are also a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium and iron.
Black Republican cherries may be used similarly to other varieties, but their strong cherry flavor and deep pigmentation lends them exceptionally well to cooked applications. They impart a robust cherry flavor and beautiful magenta color to ice cream, yogurt and baked goods. Black Republican cherries are wonderful when eaten out-of-hand, but not always easy to find fresh due to their precise window of harvest. These small heirloom cherries keep well and are great for preserving as well as drying.
Black Republican cherries have been named to The Ark of Taste by Slow Food USA, an organization that strives to protect heirloom varieties threatened by extinction.
The Black Republican cherry has a history that crosses the continent on the Oregon Trail and ends in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The planting of the first Black Republican cherry was a pivotal point in the history of the fruit industry in the Pacific Northwest. Seth Lewelling followed his brother to Oregon, bringing his cherry trees via covered wagon in the mid-1800s. Black Republican cherries fell out of favor, mostly due to their size and the small fact that they need to be picked at the perfect time or their flavor can be astringent and bitter. Black Republican cherries can be found at local farmer’s markets in Oregon and in small areas in California, Washington and in some very limited places in the eastern states.
