Sweetie apples have an oblong shape that is narrower at the bottom than at the top with an overall yellow color and a blush of red striations. The Sweetie apple offers a sweet flavor with mild spice-like undertones. Lack of tartness makes the Sweetie a very sweet apple. The Sweetie has a juicy, yellow flesh. It has a firm and crisp texture, like its Braeburn parent.
Sweetie apples are available in the early fall and throughout the winter months.
The Sweetie apple is a new variety of Malus domestica developed in New Zealand. It’s a hybrid cross between the Royal Gala and Braeburn.
To balance the sweetness of the hybrid Sweetie apple, combine with a tart apple for sauces or pies. The Sweetie can be poached or baked, allowing its naturally sweet flavor to be enhanced. Its firm texture holds up well to cooking. Add to yogurt or oatmeal for a sweet touch.
New Zealand’s Sweetie apple debuted in 2005 from the Prevar™ Limited group, who specialize in new varieties of ‘pipfruit’, and has since found its way to the US. It is a trademarked apple, only available to select orchards. The first US orchard to grow Sweetie apples was in southeastern Washington State. Now the apple can be found growing in small and large orchards in California and around the country in addition to New Zealand.
