Seckel pears are a small, tear-drop shaped variety with a very round body and a short neck. The bit-sized pears have a green skin that can darken to an almost olive color and are marked with a red blush that ranges from a bright red to maroon. The creamy, white flesh of a Seckel pear is a bit more dense and coarse than other pears. For such a small pear, Seckels possesses the sweetest flavor profile of all the pear varieties.
Seckel pears are available for a short time in the fall through the early winter.
The diminutive Seckel pears are sometimes referred to as “Sugar Pears” or “Candy Pear” for their sweet flavor. They are the smallest of all the commercially produced pears, and are quite possibly the only true American pear variety. Their true origin of Seckel pears is not known, but one theory is that it is a hybrid cross of an Asian, Pyrus pyrifolia, and a European pear, Pyrus communis.
Best for fresh use, but also known for being a dessert pear, Seckel pears lend a very sweet flavor to any application. Seckel pears are excellent for pickling and spicing; the small pears can be canned whole, or halved. Seckel pears make a great snack for small hands and fit nicely into lunch packs. Their sweet flavor lends well to baked goods like pies, tartlets and muffins. Use halved Seckel pears as a garnish or addition to a cheese plate. Seckel pears ripen from the inside-out, so the center softens first. To check for ripeness, press the fruit at the base of the stem. Taking longer to ripen than other pears, this pear keeps well when refrigerated. Ripen at room temperature.
It is believed that Seckel pears were discovered growing as a wild sapling in an orchard outside of Philadelphia in the early 1800s. Though there are some that argue that Seckel pears grew from seeds left by German immigrants travelling west. Today, Seckel pears can be found growing in the US Pacific Northwest.
