Red Muscat grapes are comparably smaller to other common table grape varieties, yet some bunches can reach up to a full pound in weight. Completely spherical with a brilliant sheen, the Red Muscat grape can range in color from a pale blush to a deep red. They are plump and firm but not as crunchy as standard red table grapes and are rather juicy with a soft bursting sensation on the palate. Their translucent inner pulp is seedless and highly aromatic. These ancient grapes are known for their sweet taste and distinctive floral arquality that is reminiscent of ripe pear, rose and candied grape.

There are over 200 varieties of Muscat grapes, botanically classified as Vitis vinifera. They are among some of the oldest cultivated grapes and thought to be the ancestor of many known varieties that are eaten today. The many cultivars can range from almost pure white to deep reddish-purple and are known for making all styles of wine from still to sparkling, dry to sweet. There are actually a number of Muscat varietals that can technically be classified as "Red", including Moscato Rosa, Rosenmuskateller and Muscat Hamburg. The most unique quality of the Muscat grape is heady aroma and flavor. The French noted this musky character and called it "Musqué”.
Red Muscat grapes are excellent sources of vitamins A, C, K, carotenes and B-complex vitamins such as pyridoxine, riboflavin and thiamine.
Red Muscat grapes can be enjoyed raw on their own or paired with cheese courses and savory charcuterie. They are often dried for raisins or made into wine because the flavor of the grape does not diminish. Their sweet floral aroma also translates well into jams and jellies. Whole roasted Red Muscat grapes have an affinity to duck, chicken and pork. Add Red Muscat grapes to curry dishes for a hint of sweetness. Freeze the grapes and add a few to a glass of wine to keep it chilled. To store, refrigerate unwashed grapes in a plastic or paper bag and are best used within one week.
In Greece, Red Muscat grapes are mainly cultivated on the island of Samos for dessert wine production. Samian sweet dessert wines are known worldwide and have inspired poets such as Lord Byron to pen famously romantic lines such as, "Fill high the bowl with Samian wine." Some historical sources cite also the grape as Cleopatra's favorite fruit.
Recent studies have shown that Muscat grapes are the earliest cultivated variety and the grape from which all others have descended. Native to Greece, the Muscat grape grew throughout the Mediterranean region and quickly spread throught most of Europe and Asia. Egyptians sent cuttings of their heat loving variety, Muscat of Alexandria, south to what is now South Africa. While European traders brought cuttings of Muscat a Petits Grains to cooler northern climates. It was not until much later that the early Spanish and Italian immigrants brought Muscat vines to the Americas. Muscat grapes are grown in many temperate regions around the world, including Chile, Spain, France and California and remains a long time favorite for making fine wine.
