Rangpur limes have the appearance of a mandarin or a tangerine on both the outside and the inside. They are small, about the size of a lime. Their peel is thin, semi smooth with shallow indentations and clings loosely to the flesh. At maturity the flesh is orange in color, tender, juicy, generally laden with seeds and very acidic. Its acidity is more comparable to a lime, which may be the reason it was referred to as a lime. Unlike most mandarins, Rangpur limes do not emit a sweet citrus aroma, rather more of a clean lemon-lime scent.

Rangpur limes, known as Kona limes in Hawaii, are botanically known as Citrus x limonia. There are at least twenty known varieties of the Rangpur lime. The most important valuation to recognize about Rangpur limes is that they are not limes at all, rather they should be classified within the mandarin family. Other names given to Rangpur limes include Canton lemon, Hime lemon, Cravo lemon, and Mandarin lime. Tanqueray gin also makes a spirit distilled with Rangpur limes.

Rangpur limes can be juiced and used to flavor margaritas, cocktails, and other beverages. The juice and the zest of the fragrant peel can be used for baked goods, as a replacement for key limes in pie, icings, preserves or similar recipes. Rangpur limes can be kept at room temperature for up to a week and will keep longer when refrigerated.
Rangpur limes are named for the Rangpur area of Bangladesh, which is located in the northern part of the country. It is adjacent to the Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya. Some accounts place the origin of the fruit in India. After being introduced to Hawaii in the mid-1880s, the citrus trees thrived in the well-drained, volcanic-rich soils.
The Rangpur lime is believed to be native to India. It is grown throughout Southeastern Asia and Indonesia, and also grows well in Hawaii and Southern California. It is often used as root stock to cultivate other citrus varieties. It was introduced to America in the late 19th century by the Reasoner Brothers who had a nursery in Oneco, Florida. The Rangpur lime was just one of several non-native exotic fruits that the Reasoner Brothers would bring to American soil.
