The Papple has a green skin that changes to a mottled orange-red when ripened. The color is said to be a refreshing change to the greens, browns and dull reds of most pears. The skin can take on an almost iridescent red color when fully ripe. A Papple’s firm texture is very similar to an apple’s, with a hard skin and crisp flesh, yet it has the juiciness of a pear. The sweet, white flesh has a floral aroma.
The Papple is available in the late spring and summer months.
The Papple is a hybrid of both the European, Pyrus communis and the Asian, Pyrus pyrifolia. Originally labeled “T109” by developers, with the appearance of an apple and the taste and texture of a pear, the Papple nickname was born.
The taste and texture of this hybrid pear makes it excellent for eating fresh, out-of-hand. Slice or dice a Papple and add to salads or serve with cheeses and charcuterie.
The Papple is a very new fruit, having only been released for public sale in the spring of 2012. It was developed in New Zealand as a hybrid of two European and Asian pears. Despite its looks and its name, the Papple isn’t related to an apple at all. Some initial planting has been done in the United States.
