Obinovot melons are available in late summer through the fall months.
The Obinovot melon is an Uzbekistan variety muskmelon and a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. Like many Uzbekistan style melons the Obinovot is sought out for its exceptionally flavored flesh.
Obinovot melons are medium sized and spherically shaped. The exterior rind of Obinovot melons are a brilliant yellow color with orange, green and brown structural markings. The rind is often accented by netting-like scratches near one end. The flesh is creamy white, slightly granular and much softer than that of conventional melons. Obinovot, meaning "father of sugar" is well-known for being sweet and flavorful.
The Obinovot melon originated in Central Asia, specifically in Uzbekistan, an area that has long been known for producing superior quality melons. Still relatively new to the United States the Obinovot melon is rarely found outside of Central Asia. In California they can be found growing in the Kern County desert town of Onyx. The weather in Onyx is ideally suited for growing melons and has limited exposure to pests and diseases that are known to plague delicate Central Asia melons such as the Obinovot. When in season the Obinovot melon can be found at specialty markets and farmers markets in southern and central California.
