The Obinovot is a relatively large melon and almost completely spherically in shape with a single protruding bump at its stem end. The exterior rind is a brilliantly colored with striations of yellow, orange, green and brown that have been likened to the aesthetic of ancient Chinese ceramics. The rind is often accented by netting-like scratches near one end and gently raised sutures that run end to end. The flesh is creamy white, slightly granular and much softer than that of conventional melons. Obinovot, meaning "father of sugar" is well-known for being sweet and flavorful.
Obinovot melons are available in late summer through the fall months.
The Obinovot melon is an Uzbekistan variety muskmelon and a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. Like many Uzbekistan style melons, the Obinovot is sought out for its exceptionally flavored flesh. They are somewhat a delicacy and considered a niche crop that can fetch prices as high as $20 per melon.
The Obinovot melon is often served raw simply on its own because of its superior flavor and sweetness. The stunning exterior of this melon should not be overlooked when considering plating and serving presentations. Scoop out the flesh and reserved the empty melon halves for salads, desserts or cold soups. Complimentary flavors include, lime, yogurt, ginger, berries, seafood, avocado, mint or basil. Once ripe Obinovot melons will keep for a week at room temperature or up to two weeks refrigerated. Keep cut melon in the refrigerator in a sealed container and consume within three to four days.
The Obinovot melon originated in Central Asia, specifically Uzbekistan, which is an area that has long been known for producing superior quality melons. Still relatively new to the United States, the Obinovot melon is rarely found outside of Central Asia. In California they can be found growing in the Kern County desert town of Onyx. The weather in Onyx is ideally suited for growing melons with long hot summers and just enough rainfall in order to concentrate the fruits natural sugars. Its remote location has limited exposure to pests and diseases that are known to plague delicate Central Asian melons such as the Obinovot. When in season the Obinovot melon can be found at specialty markets and farmers markets in southern and central California.
