O'Henry peaches are large with an orange skin and bright red blush that covers nearly the entire circumference of the fruit. The skin is thin and slightly fuzzy. The flesh of the O'Henry peach is almost a turmeric yellow with a smooth, firm texture. The freestone peach variety has a bright red pit cavity reflecting the intense color of its skin. O’Henry peaches are juicy and sweet with notes of vanilla and a hint of acid, giving it a greater complexity than the common peach.

O’Henry peaches are a late season variety of Prunus persica from Central California. These especially, the variety indicates the closing of peach season. California’s Central valley grows more peaches than the 32 other peach-growing states, combined. Over 280,000 tons of freestone peaches were produced in 2013, while the state produced 368,000 tons of the clingstone variety the same year.
O’Henry peaches were introduced in 1968 by Grant Merrill, from Central Valley, California. The variety was immediately popular and thrived in the lush growing region. It is still widely cultivated in California by both commercial and smaller farms. The slow ripening peach is commercially popular for its reliability, long shelf life, and shipping quality, in addition to the fact that it is self-fertile. The O’Henry peach is said to be the grandparent to several newer varieties, including the Augustprince peach – a fruit similar in flavor and color. O’Henry peaches are most often seen at farmer’s markets in August and September in California. They are sometimes found in commercial markets throughout the southwestern region.
