In India, the Hindi named Mosambi citrus is called an "orange" and is the closest thing to an orange grown in the country. Mosambi is also found in Pakistan and areas in southeastern Asia. Mosambi is known for its sweet juice, and its cooling properties. It is called Mediterranean lime, Palestine lime or Sweet Lemon.
Mosambi is a good source of vitamin C and potassium. They also contain small amounts of fiber, magnesium and calcium. Mosambi citrus have a high water content and are generally considered refreshing and low in sugar.
Mosambi is most often used for its juice or eaten fresh. Mosambi are sliced, de-seeded, and peeled and blended to mix with water and sugar for a refreshing juice. The concentrated juice is also used for meat, chicken and fish marinades, as well as in salad dressings. The juice is used for jams and jellies, sorbet, candies and a variety of beverages. Juice shouldn’t be stored, because it can become bitter. Mosambi will store for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
In India, according to the Ayurvedic method, Mosambi can be used to aid in ailments of the nervous system and to help with nausea or fever. Mosambi juice is considered beneficial in a regular diet and is commonly prescribed to sick patients by their doctors. Throughout India, you can find Mosambi juice sold on street corners. Chaat masala and cumin powder are sometimes added to the juice along with black salt.
Mosambi is native to northeastern India, where it is called Mitha nimboo. It is thought that Mosambi citrus may be a hybrid of a Mexican lime and a sweet lemon. The fruit can be found growing in Florida and Southern California in the United States, in Egypt (as Limun helou), Pakistan, Syria and much of the Mediterranean region. Mosambi trees will fruit 5 to 7 years after its first planting and requires a dry, hot climate to produce. Mosambi citrus was first introduced to the United States around the turn of the 19th century.
