General Leclerc pears have a true pear shape and range in size from medium-large to large. They have yellow skin that is covered with brown russeting (spotting, mottling). They have a thin delicate skin when ripe, which often leaves them susceptible to blight. Its flesh is crisp, white and juicy. General Leclerc pears are sweet with a very good flavor.
General Leclerc Pears are available in the mid-fall.
General Leclerc pears are a variety of Pyrus communis or European pear, and are likely descended from the Doyenne du Comice pear. Named for a French General, this pear has become very popular in its adopted country of Japan.
Eat General Leclerc pears fresh, out-of-hand or baked into a dessert. The pear holds up well to cooking, so it makes a fine poached pear. Grill pears as an accompaniment to salads or a poultry dish. General Leclerc pears can also be pressed to make juice.
The General Leclerc pear was introduced in 1974. Developed by the Fruit Research Station of Angers, France, the russeted pear was named after World War II French hero Jacque Philippe Leclerc. The pear was likely a chance seedling of the Comice pear, sometime before 1950. The French General Leclerc pear is still grown in France and is also grown in Nanbu Town in Japan, where the pears are quite popular and are often given as gifts.
