Criterion apples look similar to the Red Delicious variety in shape since it is tall and large, but is a different color. The skin is yellow with a pink or red blush over it, which covers a varying portion of the fruit. The white flesh is both crispy and juicy, with a mild tangy but not too tart flavor. The tree bears fruit vigorously, but biennially.
The Criterion apple is available in the fall and early winter months.
The Criterion apple (botanical name Malus domestica, like other apples) is a good eating and baking variety that comes from a chance seedling that originated in Washington State. Criterions have a mixed parentage of Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Winter Banana.
Apples, including the Criterion, are high in Vitamin C and dietary fiber. They also contain some Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, and a variety of minerals.
This is a good all around apple. Criterions are excellent fresh apples for eating out of hand or in salads, and are also great for cooking and baking. They make delicious pies, sauces, and other baked goods. They are truly a versatile apple, as they can also be dried and juiced or made into cider. Choose firm apples that feel solid and are free of soft spots. Store them in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature, and they will keep for two to three months.
Criterion originated in one of the United State's premier apple growing regions, and is part of a long apple growing tradition. European pioneers to what is now Washington State started growing apples there in the 1820s. Today, there are more than 175,000 acres of apple orchards located primarily in the eastern part of the state.
As with many varieties of apples, Criterion was discovered as a random seedling in an orchard. After its discovery in the late 1960s near Parker, Washington, it was released to the market in 1973.
