Burgundy plums are available in the summer months.
Plums are a stone fruit and members of the Rosaceae family and classified under the genus, Prunus, along with peaches, cherries, almonds and apricots. There are three species of plums, Japanese (P. salicina) European (P. domestica) and American (P. americana). Fruits vary in shape, size, flavor, and color according to cultivar.
Burgundy plums are a choice “bloom” plum with deep burgundy-colored flesh that’s firm, crisp and sweet. The Burgandy plum is reminiscent of a huge ripe Bing cherry after trying this crisp but juicy dessert plum. The Burgundy plum is great when eaten fresh but is also well-suited to be canned or made into preserves.
