Aura sweet peppers are heavy fruits with a thick, consistently mild and sweet flesh. The peppers are about four inches long and 2 inches in diameter, and they characteristically taper to a blunt point. The 2-3 lobed peppers mature from green, then yellow and finally to a shiny golden color. The peppers have a crisp, juicy texture with a sweet and fruity flavor.
Aura sweet peppers are available in late summer through the early fall months.
Aura peppers are a sweet pepper variety of Capsicum annuum. The golden-hued peppers are sometimes found under the name Golden Lipstick, for their similarity to the lipstick cultivar of sweet pepper. Like the lipstick peppers, Aura sweet peppers are a cooler climate pepper and are ideal for the cooler northern summers.
As with other sweet pepper varieties, the Aura contains high amounts of vitamins A and C, as well as carotenoids, the plant pigment responsible for the rich orange color of the fruit. Carotenoids provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Aura sweet peppers may be enjoyed fresh, fried, or roasted. Their sweet flavor is ideal for fresh green salads, snacking and for pairing with onions or other nightshade vegetables for a sauté. Slice Aura sweet peppers for sandwiches, crudité or for pizza toppings. Store Aura sweet peppers wrapped in plastic, in the refrigerator for up to a week. Cooked peppers can be frozen for up to two months.
In 2015, the National Garden Bureau declared it “The Year of the Sweet Pepper.” The decision was made based on the ease and reliability of growing sweet peppers, as well as the fact that sweet peppers can be grown in pots or in the ground and are an attractive addition to any garden.
Aura sweet peppers are a relatively new hybrid variety only being offered by Johnny Seeds online. The peppers are often advertised along with the similar tasting “lipstick” peppers and a yellow-hued sweet pepper named “glow.” All peppers of the Capsicum annuum family are native to Central and South America and were spread all over the world thanks to Portuguese explorers and traders. Aura sweet peppers are grown primarily by home gardeners and small farms.
