Ambarella fruits are oval in shape, but often display irregularities that keep the shape from being perfectly smooth. The fruit has a thin but tough skin that is often covered in a light russet. The fruit falls off the tree while still green and hard and will continue to turn golden-yellow as they ripen. It is best to consume this fruit while it is still firm as the flesh is crisp, juicy, and has somewhat of a pineapple-like fragrance and flavor.
Ambarella is available year-round with a low season in late summer.
